Interproximal ReductionInterproximal reduction (IPR) is also known as "tooth stripping" or "interdental reduction.” IPR is a procedure in which part of the thickness of a tooth’s enamel is trimmed where space is needed for orthodontic realignment. IPR is sometimes employed in Invisalign cases.
Interproximal Reduction
IPR is only one of several options Dr. Fulton considers when she decides how to gain space for repositioning your teeth. Other options include repositioning teeth in their dental arch (jawbone) and extracting teeth. However, when only a small amount of space is needed, IPR can be the best solution. This procedure has been in use for decades and over the years many dental researchers have evaluated its long-term effects. A recent study found no increased incidence of dental problems (tooth decay, gum tissue or bone problems) in a group of subjects that had tooth IPR performed more than ten years previously. Dr. Fulton performs interproximal reduction by hand, using flexible diamond-coated strips that are worked back and forth between your teeth like a fingernail file or by using a dental handpiece. The method she uses is determined by how much space is required. |
