Interdisciplinary Dentistry

Dr. Catherine Oden Fulton believes in a team approach to orthodontic treatment with the patient’s general dentist acting as the quarterback for the team. After examining a patient, Dr. Fulton sends a letter to the general dentist with her orthodontic findings. Prior to referring the case to another specialist, she will consult with the patient’s general dentist to find out if he/she will provide the care needed or has a specialist he/she wants the patient to see.

Communication between the treating dentists on the team is important. Dr. Fulton tries to meet as many of her patients’ general dentists as possible. She feels that being able to place a face with a name when working on a case adds to collegial goodwill. She attends American Dental Association meetings on the local, state and national levels and local study clubs in order to keep abreast of topics concerning overall dental health and care.

In addition to meeting dentists one-on-one, Dr. Fulton finds that email has greatly enhanced communication. Having digital photographs, radiographs and models available instantly for discussion among the dentists on the team increases efficiency.

Helping her patients raise their dental IQ is another one of Dr. Fulton’s goals. Educating patients enhances their orthodontic treatment by making them active and informed partners in their treatment, which in turn enhances compliance with treatment and hygiene instructions. Providing patients with the best care suited to an individual’s circumstances and needs is Dr. Fulton’s ultimate aim.
