Fun Fact

The word dentist comes from the French word dent, "tooth," and was first used in the mid-1700s. At first, the typical English dentist didn't much like the word and preferred to be called a tooth-drawer. Fortunately, the French influence won out over the Old English word töth. Otherwise, today we might be called toothists.

Dental trivia tidbits

When George Washington led American forces in the Revolutionary War, there were no toothbrushes. People were expected to be edentulous (toothless) by the time they reached age 30. Washington had several sets of false teeth, none of which fit very well.

False teeth, or dentures, were very expensive in those days and only the wealthy could afford them. Washington had one set made from walrus tusks. Other materials used for making false teeth included wood, ox teeth, elephant tusks and animal bones. People even had dentures made from the teeth of people who sold their teeth for money.

Cures for a toothache included biting on a piece of wood from a tree that was struck by lightening and treating the tooth with the extract of a plant grown in the skull of an animal.
